Why call it The Fitzgerald?

Well…we’re on Kennedy Street! So, why not?! HOWEVER, we were schooled by Spartanburg’s town librarian that Kennedy Street is not actually named after THOSE KENNEDY’S but after Helen & Lionel Kennedy. We decided to move forward with creating our original brand look and feel — but made sure to pay proper homage to Lionel & Helen. Here’s what we learned:

Kennedy Street draws its name from early Spartanburg residents Lionel and Helen Kennedy, whose presence in the city from the 1840s until their deaths in 1880 and 1894 left a lasting impact.

Lionel Chalmers Kennedy was born to a wealthy Charleston family, which relocated to Spartanburg in 1837 for its pleasant climate. After attending medical school, Dr. Kennedy became one of Spartanburg’s first physicians, a vocation he would practice throughout his life, providing services to all without regard to whether his patients could afford payment. In 1843, he and Helen Fayssoux Stevens of Pendleton were married. Helen’s family also had Charleston roots and a deep naval tradition. The Kennedys played a large role in the founding of three institutions that remain active today: the Episcopal Church of the Advent, the Spartanburg County Medical Society and the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. The last of which began when Helen donated her late husband’s collection of books and the lot where his office had stood to the people of Spartanburg for use as a free public library, the first of its kind in Spartanburg.
